Currency update: Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 5,817 crore still in circulation; RBI says 98.37% of high-value bills returned
“Thus, 98.37 per cent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned,” the RBI said in its statement.The facility to exchange Rs 2,000 notes has been available at 19 RBI issue offices since May 19, 2023.
From October 9, 2023, individuals and entities can also deposit these notes into their bank accounts at RBI offices.In addition, the public can send Rs 2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country to any of the RBI’s issue offices for credit to their bank accounts.The issue offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.The RBI said it periodically publishes updates on the status of the Rs 2,000 note withdrawal.
