Cloud expansion: Amazon to invest $50 bn in US government AI infrastructure; AWS expands secure cloud capacity
In a statement, the company said the initiative will give US agencies access to advanced machine-learning services, AI chips and software-development tools supporting areas such as cybersecurity, national security and scientific research, AFP reported.Amazon Web Services (AWS) said the investment will add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of computing capacity to its secure government cloud infrastructure.
Construction of these high-performance systems will begin in 2026, and the facilities will be spread “across the country.”AWS, which competes with Microsoft and Google for federal cloud computing contracts, said the transition to AI is creating unprecedented demand for specialised, secure data-centre infrastructure.AI computing requires power-intensive, high-density data centres, prompting leading tech companies to speed up expansion plans.AWS noted that it already supports thousands of US government agencies, having built dedicated government cloud infrastructure since 2011, when it became the first provider to create systems aligned with federal security requirements.The announcement aligns with Washington’s efforts to maintain an edge over China in advanced AI capabilities.Amazon said the additional investment will strengthen America’s AI leadership by providing federal agencies with “the secure, scalable infrastructure they need for the next era of innovation.”
