<p>The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals as part of a nationwide database clean-up, according to a government release.<span class=UIDAI has sourced verified death data from multiple government channels, including the Registrar General of India (RGI), state and UT administrations, the Public Distribution System, and the National Social Assistance Programme.

The electronic ministry said UIDAI is also exploring partnerships with financial institutions and other entities to strengthen access to authenticated information on deceased persons. While Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned to another individual, UIDAI said deactivation after death is essential to prevent identity fraud or any unauthorised use of Aadhaar for welfare benefits. To ease this process, UIDAI earlier this year launched a “Reporting of death of a family member” service on the myAadhaar portal for deaths registered in 25 states and UTs through the Civil Registration System.

Integration for the remaining regions is under way.Family members can authenticate themselves on the portal and submit the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and demographic details.

UIDAI then validates the information before initiating deactivation.MeitY said Aadhaar holders are encouraged to report the deaths of family members on the portal after obtaining the official death certificate from the registering authorities.
