Logistics overhaul: Piyush Goyal launches plans for 8 cities spanning states; aims to cut costs for industry
The pilot programme has started in eight cities across eight states and is designed to review existing logistics infrastructure, spot gaps, and provide a roadmap for improving efficiency and reducing costs, the ministry said.Goyal said the initiative will eventually expand nationwide, helping goods move more smoothly, boosting competitiveness, and strengthening supply chains across India.As part of the launch, the minister also introduced a guidebook on Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes, ensuring that products are categorised systematically.The guidebook lists 12,167 codes across 31 ministries and departments.
According to the ministry, it will support precise policymaking and enhance India’s negotiating power in international trade.“Mapping each HSN code with the respective line ministry will help industry understand processes related to their sectors, simplify coordination for businesses, and strengthen India’s position in trade negotiations,” the ministry said.Goyal also rolled out the upgraded Logistics Data Bank (LDB) 2.0.
Developed by NICDC Logistics Data Services (NLDSL), it provides real-time tracking of shipments, including export containers on the high seas, giving companies better visibility and planning capability.The system allows exporters to monitor containers even after they leave Indian ports, improving coordination and credibility in global markets.In addition, the minister launched Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS), a tool to compare and benchmark logistics performance across states and Union Territories.
