Urban boost in Assam: India, ADB seal $125m loan pact; project to benefit 3.6 lakh residents with better services
The project will directly benefit around 360,000 residents by ensuring continuous metered water supply and upgrading storm water management systems.
It will also introduce institutional reforms and capacity building to improve urban governance, PTI reported.Key investments include six new water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 72 million litres per day and about 800 km of distribution pipelines in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat and Nalbari.
A real-time monitoring system will also be deployed to keep non-revenue water levels below 20 per cent.In Guwahati, the project will enhance storm water management in the Bahini Basin through flood diversion channels, upgraded drainage networks and a nature-based retention pond to cut flood discharge and boost groundwater recharge.The agreement for the Assam Urban Sector Development Project was signed by Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Mio Oka, Country Director, India Resident Mission, ADB.
